  • Tesla Semi vs. Freightliner eCascadia vs. Volvo VNR Electric

The Tesla Semi, Freightliner eCascadia and Volvo VNR Electric are the three battery-electric Class 8 tractors fleets ask about most. This side-by-side comparison uses each manufacturer’s published figures so you can see how they differ on range, battery, charging and availability. ZEV Help does not sell trucks and does not endorse any model.

How they differ

Range

The Tesla Semi has by far the longest advertised range, which makes it the only one of the three that is pitched for some longer regional runs on a single charge. The eCascadia and VNR Electric are designed mainly for local and regional work where trucks return to base each night. See How Far Can an Electric Semi-Truck Really Travel?

Charging

Tesla’s fastest charging relies on its own Megacharger network and Basecharger depot hardware. The eCascadia and VNR Electric use the industry-standard CCS1 connector, so they work with chargers from many vendors. Ask any manufacturer about future support for the Megawatt Charging System (MCS). See What Is Megawatt Charging?

Track record and support

Freightliner and Volvo sell through established truck dealer networks with service locations across North America, and both trucks have been in commercial service for several years. Tesla sells and services the Semi directly and is ramping up volume deliveries. Fleets should ask each maker about service locations near their routes, parts lead times and battery warranty terms.

Weight and payload

All battery-electric tractors weigh more than comparable diesels. Ask for the scaled weight of the exact configuration you plan to buy. See How Much Does an Electric Semi-Truck Weigh?

Which one fits your operation?

  • Short regional and drayage routes with overnight depot charging: any of the three can fit; compare dealer support, price and incentives.
  • Longer daily routes with limited dwell time: range and fast-charging access matter most. Check where you could charge along the route.
  • Mixed fleets standardizing on one charger type: consider connector compatibility and whether you want to depend on a single maker’s charging network.
  • Weight-sensitive freight: compare scaled tractor weights and battery options.

Other Class 8 options include the Peterbilt 579EV, Kenworth T680E and Mack LR Electric (refuse). See our Class 8 comparison tool and Truck Models Directory.
