  • Depot Charging Calculator for Electric Truck Fleets

How much power does it take to charge an electric truck fleet overnight? Enter your fleet details to estimate daily energy, charging load, charger needs, demand charges, and a rough transformer size before you call your utility.

This is a planning estimate, not an engineering design. Your utility and a licensed electrical engineer will size the actual service.

Peak demand: managed vs unmanaged charging

Unmanaged means every truck plugs in at once at full power. Managed (smart) charging spreads the same energy evenly across the window.

How the math works

  • Daily energy = trucks × miles per day × kWh per mile. Example: 25 trucks × 150 miles × 2 kWh = 7,500 kWh.
  • Average charging load = daily energy ÷ (charging window × charger efficiency). Example: 7,500 ÷ (8 × 0.92) ≈ 1,019 kW.
  • Unmanaged peak assumes one charger per truck, all running at full power at the same time.
  • Transformer size uses peak kW ÷ 0.9 power factor, rounded up to a common utility size, with 20% headroom.

Next steps: request a load study from your utility, ask about make-ready programs and EV fleet rates, and read our Fleet Charging Guide. To compare truck costs, try the ZEV Truck TCO Calculator.
